In a Government Gazette issued to-day is an order in Council announcing that tbe introduction into New Zealand of cattle, sheep, or swine from any place beyond the limit of the Australian colonies is absolutely prohibited, and the Order in Council is to remain in force until the expiration of two years from the 15th April next unless in th^ meantime reroked. Christchubch, March 2& It. A. Sheran was brought up at Warmate to day on a charge of libelling G. M. Eeed, of the Otago Guardian. Mr O'Meagher appeared for the defence, and Mr Hammersley for plaintiff. The libel wa» proved by several witnesses, and Sherin was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, bail being acceptedaccused in £200, and two sureties of £109 < each. I Edwin Wadraea, formerly clerk of tbe ■' Heathcote Road Board, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of embezzling the funds of the Board. Auckland, March 29. Peter M'Grath was committed for trial on a charge of having committed a brutal assault on bis wife. Tbe evidence disclosed the most inhuman treatment of a sober industrious woman by a drunken husband. At tbe City Counoil meeting, the Mayor stated that advices had been re* ceived by the Bank of New Zealand that tbe balance of city debentures were sold in London at par. The amount of Government subsidy payable to the cityt is £2185. Gbaham9ToWN, March 20. j Half a ton of rich specimens were broken out this morning in the Moanatairi j mine. A single stamper h«s been going eight hours each day on specimens, and the resalt for three days,, lodged in the Bank this morning, amounted to 5250 ounces.
