BOATMAN'S.

[fbom ottb own cobbbspondbnt.] The greatest excitement was occasioned here on Tuesday and Wednesday last io consequence of it having leaked oat that the Hopeful renf had been struck in the low le?el of the Welcome Company. The news was not generally known /or some time after the event, and immediately that it was heard of a somber of persons posted off in hot haste to Reefton to pick op stray crumbs in the way of quarter and eight shares. But Io! they found that the bait would not take at all; in fact, they could not obtain a single bite, and having been commended for their attempted cleverness, and informed that they were a day behind the fair, they re* turned to Boatman's sadder and wiser men. The striking of the reef had been expected by the shareholders for some days prior, the feeling being that the campanj could not possibly miss getting the stone, but the mining manager very properly took good care to let the shareholders haye the first news of the find, and that's how it came tbatt hey could not be caught on the hop. The news of the. discovery sent the shares up 50 per cent directly, and scrip now stands at about 235, still rising. Numerous transactions in the shares took place yesterday both here and in Reefton. The stone struck is ihat from which the Hopeful obtained its best return, and is estimated to run from two to three ounces to the ton, but some additional work will require to be done io [ the Welcome mine before the directors can negotiate with the battery owners for crushing. Tramway, paddocks, &c, will bare to be constructed, and these will take some little time to execute, but the stone is there, and its quality beta? well known, the future of the company m*y be considered as assured. The striking of the reef in the Welcome is a most for* tuuate circumstance for a number of men who hare held on to the mine from the very first, and amongst the most lucky of alt the lucky ones, I may mention the

names of Mr Patrick Bailer and !£* Michael Deeg«n, both holding rerj Urge interests io the company. The Hopeful shares have also been beneficially affected, and are now saleable at £4, with ao sellers in the market. The event it one of the most important that hat occurred here for many months, and with fear such golden claims as the Hopeful, Fiery Cross, ' Just- in-Time, and Welcome in <mr midst, if Capleston does not become a stirring centre then lam no prophet. ».
