COMING OF AGE

A HALE CELEBRATION JOLLY MARAMARUA PARTY To celebrate the twenty-first birthday of their eldest son, Bill, Mr and Mrs F. E. Hale of Maramarua, recently entertained a large number of guests to a party in his honour. A big marquee was erected, festooned. with balloons and streamers, and within was set a delicious supper with the large birthday cake as central attraction. Several rooms in the house had been cleared, for dancing and cards. Mr H. Reid was master of ceremonies, assisted by Mr Don McMillan. A bracket of songs was sung by Mr Fred Downie and popular numbers by Mr King. At 11 p.m. Mr Hale asked Bill to come forward and presented him with a large key, which brought forth many comments such as “To keep your door locked” and “it is not the car key,” from the crowd. •Speaking of Bill’s good points, which they all appreciated, Mr Hale asked him to accept a wireless set from the family. Bill thanked his parents for arranging the party for him and the family for their gift. He expressed his pleasure at' seeing so many of his friends there assembled and 1 thanked them very sincerely forthe attractive gifts which had been piled on the hall table. The supper adjournment was very popular and all did full justice to the delicious fare provided. After the cutting of the cake with full musical honours, Mr F. Symes congratulated Bill upon reaching his majority, spoke of the high regard in which he was held, and wished him many happy returns of his birthday. Mr Symes also thanked Mr and Mrs Hale for their splendid hospitality, which the guests greatly appreciated. While the tables were being cleared, a mysterious person, called “Nunky Punky,” was called for and Mr Don McMillan made a most amusing speech, which the audience thoroughly enjoyed. Dancing and cards continued to a late hour and all agreed that Bill’s twenty-first birthday had been a very happy occasion.
