TIROHIA-ROTOKOHU AREA

(TO THE EDITOR) iSir., ; I wish to correct an impression created by your report of a statement made, by me at the last meeting of the Hauraki Catchment Board with regard to. a ponding area in the lower portions of the Tirohia-Rotokohu drainage district. It was not my intention to say that the area should be turned into a ponding 1 area. What I meant to say was that it should have been turned into a ponding area. The drainage in this particular areas has been controlled by the Tirohia-Rotokohu Drainage Board since 1928 when the board was formed. The board ha s done much drainage improvement work in the area and has endeavoured to alleviate the periodical flooding which occurs in the lower reaches. The flooding does not come from the Waihou or Ohinemuri rivers but from, the internal hill streams and is accentuated by the rise of flood waters in the rivers which close the floodgates. The drainage board has made representations to the Ministry of Works and to the Hauraki Catchment Board for' assistance and has received generous consideration 'but so far no scheme, which is economically practicable, has been put forward. However, I hope that the settlers in the area and the drainage board members will not rest until a thorough survey has been made and a way found to solve this problem which concerns not only the settlers in the area but the whole district.
