OLD THAMES BOYS

A LARGE ATTENDANCE COMBINED REUNION VISIT OF AUCKLAND BRANCH There was a very large gathering at a reunion of the members of the Old Thames Boys’ Association, which was held in the Fire Brigade hall, Thames, on Saturday, November 28. The Auckland branch of the association was represented by a bus load of members from Auckland." The president of the Thames branch, Mr Eddie Watson, presided.

The gathering stood in silence in respect for the memory of members who had passed away, two being the late Mr W. Blomfield and Mr W. Eddowes, past presidents and foundation members of the association.

The programme opened with the singing of the national anthem and the honouring of the toast to the King. A long and interesting programme was provided and met with much applause. All artists were recalled and some on a third occasion. Those contributing to the programme were Messrs Mitchell brothers, A. Straffin, S. Jenkins, W. Allen, Geo. Johnston, A. Daves, W. Strong, T. Cooper and A. Walmsley.

There were several speeches of a complimentary nature. The president, Mr Watson, commented upon the very large attendance and of the enjoyment of each member through the activities of the association. He hoped that the association would continue to thrive and that its numbers would continue to grow.

The mayo& of Thames, Mr S. Ensor, in a spirited address, congratulated the executive upon its achievements. Ho discussed the progress which was being made -by Thames, stressing the improvement programme the council had in view. As better communications were made with the surrounding district, new roads and bridges would enable residents to travel all over the district and view its natural resources and its farming lands. Mr Ensor spoke of the proposed community centre which was to be erected as a war memorial. That would brighten Thames and provide amenities [for visitors and residents.

Mr F. Blomfield, speaking on behalf of the Auckland branch conveyed the thanks of the visitors for the excellent entertainment and supported the proposal that the reunion be made an annual function in both Auckland and Thames. Mr Aitken, president of the Auckland branch also addressed the gathering.

A very hearty vote of thanks to the artists was carried with enthusiasm.
