WILD BULL

TRAFFIC HELD UP

INCIDENT ON TAPU HILL

dam age done to truck

A "wild black and white bull, appearing from the bushes at the side of the road, had a brief period of glory on the Tapu hill on Saturday morning, November 25. At least three vehicles encountered the animal as it stood guard over the road, refusing to to allow passage. Its first encounter was with a truck belonging to the Mercury Bay Transport Company, driven by Mr Arthur Clune. The bull charged the truck and tried to get beneath the front axle, breaking a headlamp and damaging the front mudgard as it did so. After it had extricated itself the bull tried to horn the truck but the driver managed to pass it before further damage was done. Next on the scene was Mrs Groves, of Whitianga, who managed to trick the bull. As she rounded the comer and discovered the animal in the middle of the road, she stopped the car. The bull made a mad rush at

the vehicle. Mrs Groves “revved” up the motor which frightened the beast and deflected its dive. As the bull scraped passed the car Mrs Groves speeded up and continued' on her way. Glancing in the rear vision mirror she say that she was being pursued, but the animal was left behind. Mr Trevor Hare, of Wharepoa, waS forced to travel via Coromandel. When news of the bull reached Tapu, Messrs C. Plummer and G. Russek went out and shot it.
