CALF PARADE

EXCELLENT DISPLAY DAY AT HIKUTAIA (DULCIE MORRISON WINS CUP The annual Hikutaia school and Young Farmers’ Club calf club parade was held recently in the school grounds. Excellent weather prevailed and as in past years the organisation was splendid. The two show rings with seating accommodation around them, the rows of fine exhibits tethered under the grateful shade of the trees, plus dozens of excited children and many onlookers, was a pleasing sight and proved that Calf Club day is indeed one which both old and young in the country districts look forward to. The judges for the day were Messrs E. J. C. Townshend, of Netherton, N. Finlay, of Tirohia, and the Young Farmers’ Club’s associate judge was Mr J. Scott, of Pipiroa. The grand championship of the school and Young Farmers’ Club’s calves was again won by the school, Dulcie Morrison’s Rosemary taking the premier honour, with lan Mudford’s Eastleigh Lady Grace as reserve champion. The J. A. Lowry and L. A. Bax cup for the champion school calf was won also by Dulcie Morrison’s Rosemary, with Glynis Bax’s Princess as the reserve champion. The calf rearing championship for the Max Murdock cup, open to all breeds, was won by Glynis Bax’s Princess, Doreen Harper’s Tulip securing the reserve award.

The A. Duncan cup far best heavy breed calf was won also by Glynis Bax’s Princess and the A. C. Bailey cup for best light breed calf was won by Dulcie Morrison’s Rosemary. The G. G. Mudford cup for yearlings shown at last year’s parade was won by Jock Spinks’ La Fayette. In the Young Farmers’ Club class the G. G. Bax cup for the champion heifer calf was won by lan Mudford’s Eastleigh Lady Grace, with A. Radford’s entry taking the reserve prize. During the day the president of the school calf club, Judy Cross, extended a welcome to all visitors, particularly Mr D. G. McMillan, president of the Hauraki Calf Club Group, the judges and all visitors. She congratulated the winners and thanked all these who had entered calves. She also thanked all those who had helped to make the day such a success, especially the ladies who conducted the stall. Mr G. Bacchus, the adult president, also conveyed his welcome and thanks to all present.

Mr McMillan then congratulated the Hikutaia Calf Club on once again having such a successful and well run parade, one of the best he had seen in the group. Their committees had done excellent work every year but he felt also that they were fortunate in having in Mr B. A. Kelly a headmaster and secretary who took such a keen interest in the Calf Club movement.

Mr C. Townshend spoke in similar terms and said that he considered that in the two years since he last judged in Hikutaia the general standard of the exhibits had shown an outstanding improvement.

The ladies’ committee ran a successful bring and buy stall to provide prizes and picnic funds.

The children’s committee was:— Judy Cross (president), R. Bax (ivcepresident), Dulcie Morrison, Justine Chapman, Kay Fisher, R. Spinks, N. Avery, S. Orr and Eleanor Bax (secretary).
