GOOD YEAR

PAEROA RUGBY UNION

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

IMPROVEMENT IN FINANCES

The following report was presented by the chairman, Mr W. F. F. Faber, at the annual meeting held recently of the Paeroa Rugby Union:

The Management Committee is pleased to report that after several years of negotiating with other SubUnions of the Valley your Union succeeded in arranging a system of inter-club matches with the Waihi Rugby Union, for all grades. As these arrangements could not be made until the commencement of the season considerable difficulty was experienced in finding a workable system at such short notice. Considering the short time which was available in which to put the system into operation however, the difficulties which arose were remarkably few and the experience gained with dealing with thesje will be invaluable in the future.

It was noticeable to your Committee that the combined club fixtures were of considerable benefit to all teams participating and resulted in an evening-up in the standard of play in your local Clubs. The improvement in the individual teams provided that quality of uncertainty as to the winning of the various championships, which prevents the interest of the players and the public from flagging as it did in previous seasons. This was , particularly evidenced in the steady gate receipts throughout the season. Your ComipittCe hopes that a similar system will be put into operation next season and recommends that the necessary negotiations be put in train during the summer months in order that all details will be finalised before play commences. Finance: It is pleasing to report that for the first time for several years the Union has been able to meet its expenses from current income notwithstanding the fact thfit £49/4/8 was paid to the Borough Council as rental. Credit is due to the Clubs for the way in which they co-operated with the Union to achieve this end. Facilities: The Union’s facilities have been maintained throughout the season and have been appreciated by all, and have been particularly applauded by visiting teams. Your executive still feels, however, that the quantum of rental it is called upon to pay for the use of the Domain is excessive and unless a reduction to a more reasonable rental is obtained your Union will be forced to seek a ground of its own.

Selector Coaches: We again place on record our appreciation of the untiring work efficiently carried out by our coaches'—R. S. Nicol (senior), V. G. O’Loughlin (junior), W. Fleming '(third grade).

It is regretted that circumstances arose which compelled Mr O’Loughlin to relinquish his appointment. He was replaced by Mr R. Terry who performed a difficult task with credit. Winners of Chib Competitions: Senior, Netherton Club; Junior, Netherton Club; Third, Old Boys’ Club; Fourth, Paeroa High School. Konodk-nrat Competition: Senior, United Club; Junior, Netherton Club; Third, Old Boys’ Club. Efficiently Cup: Old Boys’ Club. Your executive extends its congratulations to these winners, particularly the Old Boys. It is a new Club, and in its first year has won three cups, ’including the Efficiency Cup, which is an indication of the outstanding sportsmanship of this young team. Representative Honours: All ®laick Trials: I. Kurtovich. Combined Team against British Isles at Hamilton: I. Kurtovich and F. Martinovich. Thames Valley .. Management Committee: The Management Committee held 26 meetings during the season. These meetings were attended by members as follows: Faber 25, McKenzie 22, Meyer 21, Williams IS, Stevens 21, Chilcott 4, Rogers 25, Todd 20, Reward 26, Reddy 24, Johnson 8, Fraser 10.

■MJessrs Williams and Chilcott resigned during the season , and the Committee was pleased to be able to fill the vacancies by appointing Mr L. Johnson and Mr J. Fraser. Club delegates attended well throughout the season.

Thanks and Appreciation: Referees: To the referees who rendered a fine service during the past season. We recommend to the incoming committee that the usual sum of £2/2/- be donated to the Referees’ Association. iSt John Ambulance Brigade: We thank the members of St John Ambulance Brigade, for their service rendered to injured players. It is recommended that the sum of £2/2/be donated from the insurance fund. As a further mark of appreciation your Union is arranging to call a public meeting to raise funds to assist the St John Ambulance Association to purchase an ambulance which they have desired for many years. It is hoped that the incoming committee will see its way clear to carry this action through to finality. The Press: Who again allowed the Union generous space in the “Gazette” to print matters of interest to players and supporters.

I wish to take this opportunity of thanking our Secretary, Mr E. Rogers, for his effort during the season, also Mr J. Reddy, our Treasurer, for the assistance and interest he has given to Rugby affairs. Mr Reddy has been a tower of strength to Rugby throughout the past years and has assisted to make my duties as Chairman very pleasant. I also wish to thank the members* of the Management Committee and the various Clubs for their loyal support given to Rugby during the season. The interest shown by all is indeed gratifying.
