PA EROA’S ANNUAL EVENT

The junior record was broken in the annual steeplechase of the Paeroa District High School by Brian Williams on Friday last. October 6.

This year the whole school was divided into three classes, junior, 11 years and 12 years; intermediate, 13 and 14 years; senior 15 years and over. The juniors, 24 in number, lined up for the start at 1.30 p.m. Brian Williams * ran a very fine race to finish first and create a new record of 18 minutes 40 seconds for the course of under three miles, the previous record of ISmin. 45 secs, having stood since 1045.

All of the competitors completed the course, the final two runners of the 24 competitors passing the tape full of running and amid rousing cheers. * Junior results (first 10 -places) Brian Williams, 1; Graham Donald, 2; Colin Jenkinson, 3; Henry Death, 4; Te Huia Herekuhia, 5; Sam Howard, 6; Ronald Williams, 7; Peke Wilkinson, 8; Donald Cochrane, 9 and Michael Griffith, 10. The intermediate and senior course finished at the secondary school. In the intermediate, Neil Foster came in first to register the time of 19min. 41secs., which was better than that of the' seniors. Don Gordon had an easy victory in the seniors in the time of 20mms.
