PLANTING TREES

BEAUTIFYING PAEROA REPORT TO CHAMBER PAEROA BUSINESSMEN MEET A report as to how Paeroa could be made more attractive by the planting of tr'ees and making of gardens in public reserves was given by iMr 'G. E. Button to the September meeting of the Paenoia Chamber of Commerce. Mr Button said that two meetings had been held by the sub-comm’ttee appointed to consider the question of forming a beautifying society or taking steps to make the town more attractive. The sub-committee had traversed the town and had viewed the four approaches to the town. They learned that the Paeroa Borough Council was intending to improve one entrance to Paeroa and that the structural alterations which the Main Highways Board had in view in regard to the other three entrances precluded anything being done at present with those entrances. The sub-committee came to the conclusion that it was no use doing anything unless it was done properly, said Mr Button, and it had come to a decision that a start could be made in setting up the entrance to Primrose hill as a rose garden. Mr Button, contirfuing, said that it was considered l unwise to set up a new society. The chamber of commerce could carry out the programme in co-operation with the (borough council. When the ground had been prepared then members of the chamber should have a working bee on a Saturday morning. ’ A further suggestion was that bulbs be planted on Primrose hill on the side facing the town. In addition there was a portion of the reserve which was well suited for making a children’s play ground. The subcommittee’s idea was to take each step, one at a time and do each part properly. Mr J. J. Craig, chairman, thanked Mr Button for the report and members of the subcommittee for their attention to the matter. The planting of bulbs would help to take the bareness off the present appearance of Primrose hill, said Mr R. Jeffrey, who congratulated the subcommittee in its report. He wondered whether it might be wise to make a ■start in a locality where the results could be more easily seen by the public. Question of Mainteaiamce The borough council would, he felt sure, undertake the maintenance, if a good start were made in improving the town, said Mr E. W. Lee, who suggested there was an area r ight opposite the Ministry of Works’ premises and adjacent to the bridge at the enitrance to the town. Mr J. H. Bartlett thought that the meeting should consider first of all whether the project should be handled 1 by the chamber or a beautifying society.

If the proposal for beautifying Paeroa came from an existing body then it would be taken more notice of than if proposals came from a newly created organisation. The subcommittee felt that the chamber should undertake the work as part of its activities. Mr Craig supported the ideas put forward by Mr Button. It was doubtful whether the project came within the scope of the objects of the chamber, said Mr Bartlett, who went on to point out that there were many enthusiastic members of the community who would become members of a beautifying society but would not become members of the chamber of commerce. Not Much Respected There was not a great deal of respect amongst citizens for the chamber of commerce and that was because it had never undertaken anything big enough, said Mr Button. With a project to beautify the town there was an opportunity for the chamber to do something really worthwhile. Upon the motion of the chairman it was decided that the matter be left over for further discussion at the next meeting.
