WORK IN COUNTY
FOREMAN’S REPORT MONTH OF AUGUST KUiAOTUiNU BRIDGE TRAFFIC A full report of the work carried out by the Coromandel County Council’s staff on the peninsula during the month of August was presented at the September meeting of the council by the foreman, Mr J. T. Hinchco. The report read as follows: — No. 309 Main Highway: “Maintenance work has been carried out on the eastern side of the range, particularly on the stretch (between No. 5 and! 6 bridges. Several lengths of this road, especially along the flat, are in need of suitable patching materials. Kuaotunu: “Little general maintenance work has been attended to by the surfaceman during the period, owing to labour being concentrated upon the construction of the temporary bridge.) This work is progressing satisfactorily, all piles l being driven, headstocks, etc., fitted. Given reasonable weather conditions this structure should be sufficiently advanced to allow traffic to cross within a fortnight. The ap-. proaches to the recently constructed Grapevine bridge requires metalling. Whitianga: “The workmen engaged in the district have been attending to general maintenance work around the township area. The Buffalo beach road: is in a very bad state and the surface is seriously potholed and corrugated. It is hoped to relieve the position by obtaining 'metal from Kuaotunu quarry on completion of the bridge in that district. Whenuakite: “Several stretches of the reading in this district have received attention. However, the major handicap as in several other parts of the county is the lack of suitable surfacing materials. Whangapoua: “Some attention has been given to the large holes l in the road’s surface. Although a fair margin of relief has resulted, further attention is required, more especially along the area No,. 9 flat and Heenan’s filling. Authority for work as per No. 403 is now almost completed. As soon as the weather permits, it is proposed to have the remaining part of this wonk carried out. Kennedy Boy: ‘The workman employed in this district has attended to the approaches of a small bridge neAr Mr Thwaite’s residence. General maintenance work has been carried out on stretches of the road between the Tidal creek bridge and the bottom of the Tokatea hill. Port Jackson-Colville: “The part time workman employed on this section of road, has directed his attention to keeping the water tables and culverts open during the wet weather, This work, coupled with the urgent repairs to the concrete crossing at Mr J. Ward’s, being deemed as the most necessary at the present time. Pprt Charles-Colville: “A portion of the damaged concrete ford at Waikawau has collapsed owing to heavy traffic crossing on the unsupported edge. This extra damage will materially add to the difficulties and cost of having temporary repairs executed. Colville: “Metal has been broken out at Lang’s hill quarry with a view to the contractor spreading this metal on the worst stretches of road, plus dumping some at advantage points along the road to enable workmen to fill the potholes. It is proposed to have a series of holes bored in the metal face of the quarry while the compressor is ,in the district for future requirements. Colville-Coromandel: “Maintenance metal -qs per authority order No. 405 has been placed on the following area’s of this road Nos. 12, 13, 14. Very creditable results have been achieved, special merit being due to the generous co-operation of the citizens residing along these stretches of the road. A large quantity of metal from the quarry was deposited along the bad areas; also the work of filling the potholes was carried out in extremely good time. The surfaceman ,has also attended to general maintenance work especially on the Kick hill section. ■Coromandel: “This stretch of road, area No. 11, has received some attention by way of maintenance /metal'. Although some, relief has resulted further attention is required especially at the approaches to the Driving creek bridge. Hauraki road is in a very bad state of repair. I suggest that when crushing is again comenced at Egan’s quarry some consideration be given to the area,” concluded the report.
