PARKING PROBLEM

BUSES IN BELMONT RD. AGREEMENT REACHED OPERATORS AND COUNCIL Parking problems in Paeroa were discussed recently at a special meeting convened by the Paeroa Borough Council with motor bus operators when the whole matter of the traffic congestion in Belmont road was fully discussed. The mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, presided and others present were Crs J. H. Walmsley (deputy- mayor), N. C. Davies, E. W. Lee, H. P. Wylde and Messrs A. A. Griffiths, manager, and J. Orme, traffic, manager, of Buses Ltd., Hamilton, the town clerk. Mr M. C. Baker, the borough foreman, Mr R. Nield, and the traffic inspector, Mr W. Hackett. In extending a welcome to Messrs Griffiths and Orme, Mr Edwards traced the position l which had led to the council’s concern at the congestion of traffic caused in the vicinity of the New Zealand Railway Road Services depot in Belmont road, Paeroa. Company Concerned On the recommendation of the traffic inspector it had been decided to provide a parking area for buses owned by Buses Ltd. in Hall street. That position - had been known to Messrs Buses Ltd., who had expressed concern at the decision reached and had asked to meet the council’s works committee to discuss the position. Mr Griffiths thanked the committee for the invitation to be present. His company operated one bus only through Paeroa and it had come as a considerable surprise to the company that the one long distance bus from Thames should cause congestion, when the stop at Paeroa occupied three minutes only. His company was of the opinion that the council had not obtained a 'correct view of the position. Mr Griffiths went on to say that his, company was considering the operating of further suburban services from Paeroa and intended to establish themselves in the town.

Or Walmsley stated that beyond shadow of doubt the bus operated by Messrs Buses Ltd. was a decided factor in the congestion caused,in Belmont road members were satisfied that Buses Ltd. had contributed to the congestion. Agreement Reached

Following further discussion it was agreed that MJessrs Buses Ltd. be granted a new parking space in Hall' street alongside the premises owned and occupied by Messrs Victoria Bakeries Ltd. and that new routes be prepared as follows:— (1) From Hamilton —Along Norman- , .by road, Belmont road, into Hall

street. (2) From Paeroa to Thames —Along Hall street, Arthur l street, Willoughby street, Arney street and Thames road. (3) From Thames—Along Thames road, Station road, Belmont road,

in- Hall street. (4) From Paeroa to Hamilton —Along Hall street, Arthur street, Willoughby street, Arney street and Normanby road.

Mr Griffiths expressed his appreciation to the council for the consideration given to his company and it was agreed that .the above scheme which allowed for the one stopping and departing position, be given a trial.

It was further agreed that Messrs Edwards Motors Ltd. be given parking space (stopping and 1 departing position) in William street alongside the -premises occupied by Mr R. A. Leacock as a billard -saloon, and that Messrs Edwards Motors Ltd. be instructed that their buses must not stop in Belmont road.

At the September meeting of the council the arrangements made by the committee were approved by the full council.
