AUGUST MEETING
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COROMANDEL MEN CONFER The August meeting of the Coromander Chamber of iCommerce was held in the school on August 31, Mr A. S. Tpnkin presiding. A vote of thanks was recorded to Messrs H. B. Ball, H. A. Row&e, H. V. Denize and W. Preece for the time and interest spent by them in the interests of the new settlers at Whangapoua and the township generally. Mr W. Preece reported on the meeting of residents at Whangapoua wi}ich he had attended as representative of the chamber owing to the unavoidable absence of the chairman and secretary. A director and the outside organiser of the New Zealand Co-opera-itdve Dairy Co., Ltd., were .present and addressW the gathering. In the course of hfa remarks Mr Preece regretted the absence of the county chairman to represent the county council at such an important gathering and to Officially welcome the new settlers. Mr H. V. Denize also briefly added to Mr Preece’s remarks. ‘Mr Tonkin spoke of the successful function held recently as a public welcome to Whangapoua settlers. He said it was a very nice gesture on the part of the business people of Cbrmandel and’'all others concerned. Thanks were due to those active men who were behind the idea and who helped to carry it through. MJr Tonkin ,r aleo referred to the successful annual chamber of commerce dinner which was the occasion of making contacts with outside chambers to the benefit of Coromandel. He spoke of the advantages to be gained from those contacts and of the pleasant time spent at the dinner. ‘ A vote of thanks was> carried by acclamation to Messrs Sall and McInerney, who had both been responsible in different ways for the smooth running and successful function'. ' A letter was read from a Poet and Telegraph Department’s employee stating (he had been appointed as faultman id the Coromandel awt and that his application for a Stale house faad. jbeen transferred from Cambride to COromandel. He asked the chamber if they would support his application as lie been unable to locate a house in Coromandel 'And he -wanted to get one as soon as possible. After a 'discussion it was resolved that enquiries be made fmm the State Advances Corporation as to who allocated. the State houses! and on what basis. The chamber desired to be advised whether the support of the application would affect prior applications for State houses in Coromandel. Members spoke of the need of a faultman# being stationed at Coromandel instead of at Thames which was too far distant to permit of efficient service to Coromandelj •
