THE PENINSULA GROUP SIX BRANCHES ATTEND GATHERING AT .CQROMANDEiL ’ After being in recess for some years the Peninsula group of the Women’s Institute held its first meeting in St. George’s hall, Coromandel, on Thursday, August 10, when members of the six branches attended and spent a most enjoyable day. About 130 members from Thames, Thames . Coast, Whitianga, Rangi Marie, Coroglen and' Coromandel got together and upheld the principles of the institute.

Just after 10 a.m., after greetings had been said, two demonstrations were given. One was the making and painting of plaster of Paris brooches by Miss Russell of Coromandel, and the other demonstration was of oil painting on fabric by Mrs Rout also of Coromandel. The demonstrations were most ,= interesting and keenly watched by a large number of members. •

The entries for the Lithgow silver cup, which was to be competed for at group meetings, were of a very high standard. The results were as fol-' lows:—

Native flowers and berries in two lb. golden syrup tin, Coromandel 1; Whitianga, 2; Thames Coast, 3. Marmalade, Coromandel, 1; Thames, ,2; Whitianga, 3. Knitted, bedsocks, Rangi Marie, 1; Coromandel, 2; Thames Coast, 3. Shortbread, Coromandel, 1; Whitianga, 2; Thames Coast, 3. Hot water bag cover from boiling material, Thames, 1; Whitianga, 2; Coromandel, 3. The supper room of the hall next presented & very happy scene as following the singing of the institute song everyone sat down to an appetising lunch. After the good things provided had received a fair amount of attention, Mirs Ball, president and chairman of the group meeting, extended a welcome to all the visitors and 1 said how congenial it was for . air to be together in ohe big gathering. • “We are privileged, she continued, “to have with us four members of our executive, Mrs Lithgow, our federation president, 'Mrs Scott, our Voluntary Organiser and Mrs Crawford and 'Mrs McCombes.” She concluded her remarks by thanking everyone for coming and all those who had helped with the arranging and toped everyone would have it very happy day. ’ Mrs Hughes, Whitianga president, then presented Mrs Ball with a floral spray, after which she invited the next group meeting to be held at Whitianga, as the time for it to be held coincided with Whitiangi institute’s birthday and they would like to combine the two events arid make a great day of it. Mrs Lithgow briefly addressed the and said (she was most gratified to be present at the first group meeting and congratulated Coromandel on its successful arrangements and carrying out of the day’s happy gathering.

The guest speaker was Mrs Emmett who gave a most interesting talk about her nursing experiences in India during the war; < The roll call “an amusirig incident in 'institute” was the humorous side of the day’s programme and produced plenty of laughter. ' A traditional welcome was given by the members of the Rangi institute. Items by the Whitjanga singing circle were delightful and received a ■most attentive , bearing. Thames COhU contributed a humorous play, which was very well done and received its share of. appreciation. * Coromandel conducted a housewives quiz which brought forth some useful hints for the home and was won by Thames? The results being, Thames 10 points, Coromandel 9, Ahimia and Coroglen 6, Whitianga 4, Thames Coast 3.

Mrs Lithgow presented the silver cup to Coromandel congratulating that .institute on its winning the cup for the first year. The points for the competitions for the cup were:— Coromandel 12, Whitianga 7, Thames 5, Thairies Coast and Rangi Marie 3. It was decided by the executive of the group to accept Whitianga’s invitation and hold the hext group meeting at Whitianga iri February, 1951. A delightful afternoon tea was served after which Mrs A. M. Isdale proposed a vote of thanks to the chair which was carried by acclamation. Mrs Ball thanked everyone for making such a success of the gathering. Dr. Logan conveyed greetings from Coroglen members who were unable to be present. The national anthem brought to a close this successful event.
