'RETAINED BY TAIRUA-HIKUAI

Rugby enthusiasts saw an exciting match at Tairua on Saturday last, when Tairua-Hikuai retained the Waione cup by defeating Kuaotunu by 17 points to 14.

Donated by the late Mr Wm. Hamilton of Whenuakite, the Waione cup is played for in a one round competition, at the conclusion of which, the Kuaotunu and Tairua-Hikuai teams were .equal on points. On Saturday, the full time score was 14—all and Tairua-Hikuai won by scoring a try during extended time. The spectators, showed appreciation of any good Work, and with the score even several times during the match, barracking was, very spirited.

When Tairua-Hikuai kicked off, play (Was fairly even for a time. Both teams appeared to be a little stale and there were a number of hold-ups which kept First Aid attendant, Mt F. Amundsen, very busy; TairuaHikuai were first to open the play when Pat Beach sent his back line on the attack. D. McLean «halted the attack with a high tackle from which he emerged with a badly cut upper lip ' and was forced to retire for medical treatment. He was replaced by B. Chaney. Kuaotunu pressed strongly with forward rushes z but the defence was sound and B- Heath cleared with a good kick. Following a period of tight forward play, an infringement gave L. Pattie the chance to put a kick over, the half-time score was Tairua-Hikuai 3, Kuaotunu 0. Following the spell, Kuaotunu pressed to the twenty-five where Winiata evened the score with a penalty kick. Tairua-Hikuai forwards attacked strongly with loose rushes, which Kuaotunu failed to stop and R. Laycock dived in to score. The kick failed. Tairua-Hikuai 9, Kuaotunu 6. Tairua-Hikuai pressed and from a scrum Pat Beach opened play for Cory-Wright and N, P. Beach to handle well. Crumbb, at centre, cut in nicely before passing to ( Goodhue, who was l forced out by Bradshaw. Tairua-Hikuai forwards were almost faultless at this stage and the loose rushes held Kuaotunu in difficulties

until a touchdown brought a drop out. Up and under tactics gave another five points to Tairua-Hikuai when Cory-Wright secured and sent N. P. {Beach over to score. Pattie converted. Tairua-Hikuai 14, Kuaotunu 6. Kuaotunu attacked strongly to the twenty-five inhere, following hard forward play, D. Jones passed to Winiata , "who sent P. Simpson over for a determined try. Winiata converted. Tairua-Hikuai 14, Kuaotunu 11. From a scrum Pat Beach sent his backs away in a promising move in which this back line handled well but failed to penetrate and I. Simpson cleared with a good kick. Kuaotunu forwards pressed and a penalty kicked by Winiata made the score at the call of time. Kuaotunu 14, Tairua-Hikuai 14. Commencing five minute spells, ' Tairua-Hikuai attacked strongly to takfe play ovdr Kuaotunu’s line, where D. Laycock dived in to score wide out. The kick failed and the game ended with the score Tairua-Hikuai 17, Kuaotunu 14.

Mr R. Quigg was referee. In the final for the Waione cup played Whenuakite in W49 season the same clubs’ teams competed, and at full (time the score was 3—all. DEbitra’ time Wad to be played |fior Tairua-Hikuai to win the cup.
