PAEROA HOSPITAL
NEW MATRON ARRIVES
STILL SHORT OF STAFF
RELIEVING MATRON’S REPORT
“Miss J. E. Toussaint 'has been appointed matron of the Paeroa maternity hospital and has arrived to take up her duties,” said Mr A. L. Neighbour, secretary to the Thames Hospital Board at its August meeting.
Mr Neighbour expressed pleasure in being able to make the announcement as in making her report to the board the relieving matron, Miss W. Moore, had stated that the staffing position at the Paeroa institution was serious. Miss Moore stated that the nursing staff was four short, a matron, a sister and two aids. The nursing staff at present comprised six, with a domestic staff of two and one other casual employees. During the month of July the highest number of occupied beds in the Paeroa hospital was I<3, the lowest number during the month being eight, making an average of 10.84 occupied beds.
It was intended to obtained a permanent second sister for Paeroa at the earliest possible moment, feaid M|r Neighbour, who went on to say that the board always tried to get an appointee to sign an undertaking to remain for a maximum period of two years but in small places it could not be expected that nurses would tie themselves to remain for any definite period. The social attractions in the larger towns, which were lacking in very small towns, would always make it difficult to retain staff for long periods, said Mr J. W, Dan'by, chairman of the board.
