EXTRA MEMBER

WHITIANGA SUCCEEDS

SPECIAL MEETING HELD COROMANDEL COUNTY MOTION A special meeting of the Coromandel County Council was held on Wednesday last to discuss the notice of motion dealing with extra representation for Whitianga. Cr. H. T. Robinson appealed to the council for a unanimous vote.

Cr.’ A. J. Denize »said he felt that Mercury Bay had not got confidence in the council and referred to concessions made to the ratepayers at Whitianga. He felt that the time was not opportune and that the question of an extra representative for Whitianga should be deferred till after the revaluation of the whole county. Cr. S. Strongman said he would be more in favour of a resolution to reduce Coromandel’s representation to two and Colville’s to one than any increase at the present time.'' Cr, S, H. Le Roy-Dyson: “I’ve heard with interest Cr. Denize’s remarks.

He’s brought up the past again and that does not tend to make harmony amongst us. It’s of no benefit to this council to draw comparisons between one riding and another. What’s past is past. . . .” Cr. Denize: “There’s a repetition of thein now.”

Cr. Le Roy-Dyson: “If he will support the extra representation at some future time why not‘now?”

Cr F. H. Purdom: “Until such time as there is a' redistribution of the boundaries of this county there will always be arguments about represenf Cr. T. V. Whittle: “The granting of this request at this time is a smalh price* to pay for the goodwill of the people of Mercury Bay when we need all the co-operation possible in view of the very serious financial position today.”

The chairman, Mr E. Deeble: “We want to establish by the attitude of this council real goodwill between all the peoples this county. While we have given Mercury Bay every consideration and fair treatment it will add 7 to the general feeling of confidence by giving them an extra representative. We must take a broad outlook and not antagonise any section of the ratepayers when we are in such a precarious position, We are going to the poll to get more money to use. I intend to go round to the people and talk about the bridge rate. We must look, further ahead than the position today and get the co-opera-tion of all the people. ; to grant the extra representation to Whitianga was put to the vote and carried, CoundMors /Denize ' and Purdom voting against the motion. Or. Strongman did not record bis vote.
