COROMANDELjCOLVILLE abba
The bad state of the Colville-
Coroinandel road was brought to the notice of the Coromandel (County Council by Cr. J. H. Reddy. He said that up till 25 or 26 years ago the road was only a track and the road had been made on top of the track. No proper foundations had been put down to carry the heavy traffic passing over it today.
At the last meeting of the council he and Cr A. J. Denize had asked for 100 yards of metal to patch the worst places from Branch creek on to Lang’s hill.
Owing to the serious financial position of the council at the present time the request was declined. . Cr Reddy said that Cr. Denize and himself and other settlers were willing to pay their rates ribw if something could, be done before the cream season commenced. He went on to say he was convinced that if a loan was carried to reconstruct-the main
roads in the county the job of maintenance would not be the nightmare it was now. He and Cr. Denize wanted to put surfacemen in the Colville ruling off in the summer time and so have extra money for metalling but the council would not agree.
Continuing' Cr Reddy said that when the tar sealing project came "'up first they were told they would have more metal on their roads. The money •had now been spent on surfacemen’s wages all through the summer. They still could not get any metal. Councillors from other ridings said that the surfaceman could not be put off. Cr H. T. Robinson was not affected as he had a tar sealed road. Cir Denize endorsed Cr Reddy’s remarks and said it was only about another five weeks or so before the cream lorry would be running full time and he emphasised the urgent need of repairs to the road being done first. The chairman, 'Mr E. Deeble, pointed out that the •councillors of Colville iriding Were asking for preferential treatment and the council could not create a precedent, however much it wanted to. He said -the estimates would be discussed later in the day and councillors would be in a better position to see what could be done. The matter was left at that.
