CONFLICTING CLAIMS
PAEROA CROQUET CLUB
BASKETBALL-HOCKEY CLUBS
i The application of the Paeroa Basketball Club and the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club for permission to use the croquet club pavilion in the Paeroa domain was again the subject of considerable discussion at the July meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council.
At the meeting a letter was read from the eroquet club which stated 'that the president and secretary of club interview the clubs after which a meeting of the members of the croquet club would be called.
The mayor’ Mr Edwin Edwards, stated that he had inspected the pavilion which was full of gear 'belonging to the croquet club but adjoining
the pavilion were two rooms which '■ could be 'Used and made available to the players of basketball and hockey, r Cr O’Brien (pointed out that '• five weeks had elafpsed since the , application was made. Visiting' - teems 'had been to Paeroa ancLhad ito change in the'buses. One girl bad been injured and had to be ’ rander the trees. > The croquet club had made, no attempt to Approach the other clubs. it seemed that nothing had been done and he moved that permission be granted the basketball and hocky clubs to use the croquet pavilion. The season would be over before negotiations Were finalised. The croquet club would not be ’interfered with but the players •of the other clubs required a place to .change. , 1 Cr O’Brien, said he wanted the mat- . ter-finalised without any further delay. Cr C. E. J. Gwilliiam expressed the opinion jjhat it was pretty “hot” when teams of (girls 'had to i change in ata. Public buildings were on public grounds and those buildings should be made available. He would support' the motion that (the lady players be granted permission. Or N. C. Davies drew attention to (the fact that five weeks had etaipsed and nothing had been ' dune. The council should do snme- * thing about it. fc; The two rooms mentioned by the - mayor would >be quite satisfactory for use for the remainder of the season and some ararogement might be made;for the following season, added Cr Davies. 'dr P f P. Wylde moved as an amend- ; ment that permission be granted, to use the two rooms adjacent to the .pavilion. The depurty-maynr, Cr J. H. Wahneley/expressed quite a diffwent view from that expressed by efihnr. miunciilors. He thought it for >the council to take up a • dictatorial attitude with a club which had over the years * spent considerable money in setting up amenities for its memOr O’Brien stressed the point that all he wanted, was the use of a building bn the domain for the girls of the two clubs to change in. He did not care what building it was. As far as he warf’ I 'concerned it would be the bowling pavilion or any other building hut he wished to point out that the domain board had contributed tothe erection of the croquet IppaviKon. Cr. Wylde’s amendment was carried upon being put to the vote. Ss' I '' ■ ''
