TAHUNA - PAEROA

REOPEN OLD ROAD SPRINGDALE REQUEST BUSINESSMEN INTERESTED For the purpose of making application to the Minister of Works to open up the TahunaPaeroa road an open meeting of those concerned was held at Springdale, recently and a report of the meeting was contained in a letter from Mr D. G. Wilson of Eilstow which was placed before the annual meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce held recently. The letter stated that a deputation was elected consisting of Messrs Coombe (Springdale) Palliser (Eastport), G. Andrew, D. G. Wilson (Elstow) with Mr J. M. Stewart, chairman of Piako County Council and the support of the Paeroa chamber was sought in approaching the Minister in the near future and urging him to give favourable consideration to the scheme.

Mr J. H. Bartlett, secretary of the chamber, reported that he had been advised that the residents of Springdale proposed to make a special effort to have the old road from Tahuna via Tirohia bridge reopened when in the very near future the Hon. Mr W. S. Goosman would be visiting the Piako district. Mr Bartlett recalled that about two years ago members! of the chamber had attended a meeting at Morrinsville relative to the same matter and it appeared that there was certainly a demand by settlers at Springdale for access to Paeroa.

A meeting had been held at Elstow, stated Mr N. C. Davies. The road had; deteriorated on account of peat fires but. the farmers were evidently serious in their proposals as there were about 60 farmers at the meeting he had attended as a delegate from the Paeroa chamber. A deputation should be sent by the chamber to support the request of the Springdale farmers. Importance to Paeroa The road from Paeroa'to Springdale if opened up would bring the trade of about 100 settlers into Paeroa and it was of the greatest importance to the town of Paeroa for there was room in the area, which would be traversed by the proposed road, for a large scale settlement of farmers in the very near future, said Mr A. W. Carter, who urged; the chamber to treat the matter as one of the utmost importance in the activities of the chamber The new president, Mr J. J. Craig, advised the meeting that he proposed to make a trip over the road to Springdale as he could see the importance of the opening up of the road, to the business people of Paeroa. It was moved by Mr A. C. Boulton that a deputation be appointed to proceed to Springdale and discuss matters with the delegates elected at the Springdale meeting. The motion was carried and Mr Craig and Mr Davies were appointing delegates to act on behalf of the chamber.
