LEVEL RAILWAY CROSSING

(TO THE EDITOR) Sir, —I read with surprise that the . Ohfinemuri County Council has (requested the Railway Department to abandon its plans to eliminate the . level crossing at Karangahake. There are few crossings more dangerous than this one and fewer still more easy to eliminate, even if the cost is £4OO as estimated. The Railway Department has previously offered £lOO towards the cost and the alteration would also save the county replacing the old wooden bridge at the foot of the Crown hill, a jpb'that will have to*be done within a few years. Should a serious accident occur at the crossing the council may well regret its decision. J. C. COTTER.
