DEPLORABLE ROAD

KOMATA NORTH SCHOOL DANGER TO CHILDREN COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION What was described as the deplorable condition of the road frontage between the area of the Komata North school and the Pae-roa-Thames main highway was the subject of a letter from the school committee to the May meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council held recently in Paeroa. The letter referred to previous correspondence' and complaints from the school committee and stated that the settler whose responsibility it was to clear the frontage had failed to do so. The committee was much concerned by the fact that school children, who had to use the road had frequently to pass cattle and on account of the growth on the frontage, were prevented from getting off the road. Truck drivers complained that in using their trucks they had to almost run their trucks into blackberry to give safe passage to school children. For such reasons the committee urged the council to take some action to remedy matters. Cr H. R. Morrison informed the meeting that the complaint was justified and it was difficult to understand why no attempt had been made to clear the frontage. The engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, informed the meeting that the frontage in question was one of the worst road frontages in the county and he knew of no reason Why the frontage had not been cleared. Cr. J. A. Lowry moved that the council take immediate action. Cr. Morrison moved that the council make a further effort to induce'the settler to attend to the clearing of his road frontage and warn him that the council had no option but to have the frontage cleared and would use its fullest powers for that purpose. In such an event the cost to the settler would be much greater. Cr. Lowry withdrew his motion and Cr. Morrison’s motion was duly carried.
