GIFT AFTERNOON
(SUFFERERS FROM A FIRE sponsored BY WHAREPOA A gift afternoon for Mrs J. Kelsen of Wharepoa, who was unfortunate enough to have her home and all effects destroyed by fire last week, was held recently in the Wharepoa hall. The function which was sponsored by the Wharepoa Women’s Institute was well attended by members <?f the institute, the Hik’dteia branch of the Plunket Society and residents of Wharepoa and Hikutaia. An enjoyable afternoon passed quickly, a number of competitions being keenly contested*, and all joining in community singing. After a dainty afternoon tea had been served, the institute president, Mrs D. Morrison, asked Mrs Kelsen to accept a large number of parcels, a number of which vrere from residents unable to attend, while others were sent from as far away as Thames. The gifts included a splendid assortment ictf (household linen |pf every variety, crockery and kitchenware. Mrs Kelsen thanked everyone for their kind thoughts and wonderful gifts. They were, she said, very much appreciated. At the conclusion of the afternoon Mrs Morrison thanked everyone for their attendance and generosity and wished Mrs Kelsen every happiness in her new home. The following were the winners of the various competitions:— Vegetable and flower competition, Mrs T. Bax; length guessing, Mrs A. Howarth; kitchen novelty, Mrs L. Robinson; weight guessing, Miss Joyce Morrison; mystery parcel, Mrs Cedric Murdock.
