KUAOTUNU WIN

MATCH WITH WHITIANGA BRYCE CUP COMPETITION A good crowd was present at the Lyon centennial park, Whitianga, on Saturday, to see Kuaotunu defeat Whitianga by six points to five. The match was the first in the second round of the Bryce cup competition, and the win put Kuaotunu in the running for the trophy.

From the kick off, play was fast, bright, and very even. Both packs worked well with no scouting. Heeling from the rucks was easily the best seen this season, but back play was patchy, and lacked combination, Kuaotunu opened the score when A. Simpson secured after a forward rush to go over well out. The kick failed. Kuaotunu 3, Whitianga 0. Open play by Kuaotunu back looked promising, but the defence held. Whitianga forwards swept to the attack where W. Just put in a strong run, well supported by A. E. White, who was held up right on the goal line. Forward work held Kuaotunu in their twentyfive, but Whitianga lacked finish, and half-time came with the score still three nil in Kuaotunu’s favour.

Early in the second spell Whitianga pressed strongly to Kuaotunu twentyfive, where, from a scrum, C. Simpson sent to W. Just who scored a try which he converted. Whitianga 5, Kuaotunu 3.

From this stage Kuaotunu dominated the play, chiefly with fast open play. A little more team work would have added a finish to some promising moves. Some good kicks eaught Whitianga out of position, but promising dashes by the Kuaotunu hades failed several times through lack of support. Kuaotunu took the lead when N. Wihiata put over a nice penalty kick. Kuaotunu 6, Whitianga 5.

kuaotunu continued the attack and Winiata handled twice in one move, but was tackled nicely by E. Lee. I Brophy snapped up a cross kicked to pave the way for Bradshaw who put in a strong run only to crash on the corner flag. The game ended with no further score. Mr A. Whiting was referee. The teams were:— Whitianga: W. Just, O. Whiting, T. Martinovich, E. Lee, J. Hawkeswood, F. Simpson, C. Simpson, C. Rivas, A E. White, C. Peachey, I. Lowe, D. Neal, D. Brunton, R. Brunton, L. Blade. Kuaotunu: D. Simpson, I. Simpson, J. Bradshaw, I. Brophy, A. Just, N. Winiata, N. Crawford, D. Taylor, P. Simpson, A. Simpson, W. Simpson, A. Storey, J. Courtney, L. Dyson, C. Wormaid.
