WHAT’S NEW” REVUE

(TO THE EDITOR) • Sir, I have now been in Paeroa five years, and never during this time have I seen amateur talent encouraged. Referring to the recent revue, held here in Paeroa, also in Thames and Te Aroha, I consider that taken on the whole it was very good for an amateur performance, and I do believe that the general public really enjoyed it, with perhaps a few exceptions, believing that each artist was doing his, or her, best.

It cannot be expected that every artist should be exceptional • for in this as in every other profession, there are the good, the mediocre and the exceptional. All one can do, in a small locality, is to sort out sufficient numbers from the talent available and willing to assist. Let us not blame the whole cast, for one discrepancy! These artists spend a considerable amount of money, and time, also energy in an endeavour to improve their talents. Surely a word of appreciation then is not out of place. Those of us who have no talents may be appreciative and encouraging listeners. I would like to ask, how is it pos tsible for amateur performers, beginners, to obtain the standard obviously expected of them in these small towns, unless they are constantly given the opportunity for improving themselves, which can only be done by continual stage performance, and the indulgence of the public. Because complete freedom of action, stage personality etc., can be gained only by experience. Even those of us who have acquired the standard acclaimed by cities soon lose it for want of practice in small towns. It is not always the most talented who is the most successful!

z Paeroa, wake up, support your local talent, of which you have much! 'Supporter,’ Paeroa.
