THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY "Public Service" MONDAY, MARCH 6, 1950 FARM EXPERIMENT

An experiment it productionboosting soon to bo tried in the*' Waikato should create a lot of interest in the rest of the Dominion. The idea is to veljct about two dozen , farms and attempt to lift their output 6y the use of modern methods. The aim will be to make them as highly efficient as a research station. In particular, attention will be paid to pastures, pasture management, drainage, animal breeding and piggeries. It is inconceivable that such an experiment could fail to get good results. There is certain to be an improvement on some of the farms even a disappointing response on others, and on a few there may be spectacular returns. The odds, however, are on a general all-round benefit. Modem machinery and modern methods will not alone turn a mediocre farm into a good one, nor a good farm into a super producer. There is still the human element to be considered. Labour i* stm«eceBMry. There is no, «übh . short cut in tandgg* ■■ X The Waikato scheme should fill a gap between the experimm* tai station and the farm. The research station can often produce the results to back up its theory because it has advantages not enjoyed by every, farm and conditions that cannot fab duplicated by every farmer. The model farms, as they are sure to be named, should beoerntfe a more common measuring stick for the average farmer, especially ip districts approximately the same in climate and soil. There. is room for improvement cm mapy farms in New Zealand, and there is rpom for an experiment that is not confined, to the acieunst and the expert, though the and the advice of both wffl bet available.
