RUGBY MATCH

MONTGOMERY SHIELD WIN FOR COROMANDEL LARGE CROWD PRESENT A large crowd was present at the annual representative Rugby match between Coromandel and Mercury Bay for the Montgomery Shield played at Coromandel on the King’s Birthday, June 6. The result was a win for Coromandel by 9 points to 3 after a game in which the issue was in doubt to the call of time.

From a scrum T. Harrison started a movement in which all the backs joined and which ended with Mclntosh scoring a nice try near the corner flag. From a penalty kick Leef added three more points to Coromandel’s score.

In the second half the home team was penalised and the Bay with a good kick raised its score to three. Some exciting play followed and Mclntosh securing l possession cut through the defence to score a solo try, making the final score Coromandel 9, Mercury Bay 3. Mr R. Harrison was referee.
