INSTITUTE NEWS MONTHLY MEETING COROMANDEL BRANCH The Coromandel Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Oddfellows’ hall on May 3 when Mrs Ball presided over an excellent attendance. As it was close to Mother's Day. mothers had been invited to attend and everyone wore a white flower in honour of the mothers present. The president extended a welcome to the visitors and this was confirmed by acclamation.
The evening was also the occasion of a -farewell to two institute members who aie leaving the district. They are Mesdanies C. H. McKenzie and B. Bouskill. Mrs Ball referred to their activities in the social life of the community, and said that it was with regret that all had to say good- > bye to them. Mrs Ball concluded by wishing both ladies good luck, good health and happiness in their new surroundings. Mrs McKenzie and Mis Bouskill were the recipients of lovely sprays and each suitably replied. Cancer Campaign The president thanked all those members who had assisted so ably with the cancer campaign appeal and also the ladies of the Women’s Division who had co-operated and whose efforts had resulted in £4G being collected for this worthy cause. The Women's Division at Tereienga had also helped by running a dance and the proceeds of same were included in the total amount. A vote of thanks to the committee and helpers from those members who had not taken an active part in the appeal was carried by acclamation. Mrs E. Turner gave a most interesting report on the bi-annual council meeting held recently in Thames, and she was thanked for her report by acclamation. It was decided to start a drama circle.
A demonstration was given by Miss Russell, on how to make sprays from maize. This was most interesting and a very popular item in the evening’s entertainment. Boy Scout Fund A special effort in aid of the Boy Scout hut fund was staged (hiring the evening when a number of gifts in the form of pound parcels were auctioned by Mrs R. Turner. Gifts ranged from pounds of butter to pounds of oranges, cornflour, sugar, etc., and the net result amounted to £4 6s. After this effort a delightful supper was served by the hostesses Mesdames Deeble and Dear and Miss J. Deeble. The results of the competitions were as follow; Best bloom, Mrs Lucas 1, Mrs Ariell 2, Mrs Reddy 3; knitted squares, Mrs N. James 1, Miss Russell 2, Mrs Venables 3; slice pumpkin, Mrs N. James 1, Mrs Strongman 2, Mrs McKinley 3; jam tart, Miss Barrett 1, Mrs McKinley 2. Mrs Strongman 3.
