MATCH AT WHAKATIWAI NGATEA DEFEAT MIRANDA In the opening Rugby match of the season at Whakatiwai last Saturday the Ngatea senior team defeated Miranda seniors by eight to nil. Considering that it was the first game of the season the standard of play was quite fair. The two Ngatea players, R. Lawrence, fullback, and S. Fisher, five-eighths, were the outstanding players of the day. Better combination was shown by the Ngatea players. They packed and followed up well and were quick to exploit any advantages. The Miranda players did not appear to make a happy combination. Their play in packing left much to be desired whilst the passing and handling of the ball by the backs was erratic. Miranda won the toss and aided by a strong wind made a series of attacks only to be sent back by Lawrence’s good line kicking. Rouse on two occasions just failed to score for Miranda. A determined rush by the Ngatea forwards carried the ball into Miranda’s territory, Tatton taking the ball at his toe across tho line to score for Ngatea. Lawrence converted. In the second spell Ngatea had the advantage of the wind. S. Fisher started a nice movement but over eagerness by other backs spoilt the effort. Ngatea was awarded a penalty kick and S. Fisher put the ball over the bar. D. Anderson, Miranda’s halfback, broke away but failed to score after a nice run. Mr S. Wilson was referee. PEACE CUP CHALLENGED BY THAMES A decision to issue a challenge to the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union for the Peace Cup was made at the management committee meeting of the Thames Rugby Union this week.
