FOOTPATHS

COROMANDEL PROBLEM

DECISION OF COUNCIL

SHINGLE FROM WAIARO BEACH

A much discussed subject in Coromandel is the footpaths around the township and as the council has been urged by various councillors and residents to do something about it before the winter, Cr. F. H. Purdom asked at the April meeting of the Coromandel County Council if some metal chips could be purchased from Matatoki for immediate relief of this urgent work.

“ Even if they do cost us £3 a yard, ’ he said, “ we must get our footpaths fixed up before the winter; they are a disgrace.” Cr. H. T. Robinson suggested getting a small portable crusher at McLeod’s quarry and then there would be chips available for all over the county.

Cr. T. V. Whittle: “ This practice of chipping weeds off the footpaths on the sealed part alone costs about £l5 a year and each time it is done more of the sealing is chipped awqy. Why

not spend the £l5 on chips from Matatoki, and do away with this nightmare —then the surfaceman could go and chip elsewhere.” The chairman, Mr E. E. Deeble: “ The position is getting desperate. I meet adverse comments every day and I do not feel like standing it any longer. That’s why I advocate getting a load of chips from Matatoki for immediate relief of the position, and in future to use shingle from my beach at Waiaro which I have offered to the council free of cost.” Councillors mostly were of opinion that the shingle obtained locally should be used. A sample was produced, and examples given of the successful use of it for concrete work and sealing.

After quite a lengthy discussion it was finally decided to use the shingle from Waiaro and the work to be proceeded with immediately.
