MARCH MEETING HELD £2O FROM GARDEN PARTY RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS The March meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute was held in the hall at Whitianga. The president, Mrs Sharpies, was in the chair and there were 26 members and one visitor present. A birthday bouquet was presented to Mrs Kelsey. The president thanked the garden party committee for their assistance at the garden party and Mrs L. White for giving the use of her garden for the function. The sum of £2O was raised for istitute funds. Members -were reminded that goods for English parcels may be brought each month. Mrs Stocker was elected delegate to the April federation meeting, and Mrs Russell agreed to accompany her to take part in the competition. It was decided to suport Mrs Lithgow’s nomination. The roll call, “ Ideas for progress ” was well answered. It was decided that a deputation consisting of Mesdames Ralph, Bronlund and Heald

Messrs W. Heald and G. W. Ross are to be asked to accompany the ladies. Supper was served by Mesdames Oxley, Hooker, Kelsey and Packer. A bouquet was presented to Mrs Heald who is leaving the district, with all good wishes from the institute members. A presentation 'book will also be presented. Competition results were: Best vase flowers, Mrs Lee 1, Mrs Bronlund 2. Best head, Miss Lee 1, Mrs Bronlund 2. Best bloom, Miss Lee 1, Mrs Bronlund 2. Bound buttonhole, Mrs Bronlund 1; wholemeal biscuits, Mrs Lee 1. ANNUAL MEETING OFFICERS FOR YEAR ELECTED The annual meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute followed the ordinary March meeting and the following officers were elected. President, Mrs Russell; life vice-president, Mrs Lyon; vice-presidents, Mrs Stocker and Mrs Bronlund; committee, Mesdames E. Bronlund, R. Brown, F. W. Lee, W. Lowe, E. Sharpies, A. Wotherspoon, V. Stocker, W. Oxley, N. A. Wells Jnr. and Miss Lee. The three returning officers, Mrs Sharpies, president, Mrs A. Crabb, secretary, and Mrs R. A. Smith, treasurer, were presented with bouquets. It was agreed that the president, secretary and treasurer should not bring a supper plate to the meetings. The meeting closed with the national anthem. Aggregate points for the year’s competitions resulted: Best vase of flowers, Mrs Lee 1. Best bloom, Mrs H. Clark 1. Best head, Mrs H. Clark and Mrs Lee equal 1. Handiwork, Mrs Lee 1. Cooking, Mrs Lee 1, Mrs Bronlund 2. At a committee meeting the following day, Mrs W. Lowe was elected secretary and Mrs Sharpies treasurer.
