SEASON OPENS
GOLF IN PAEROA FUNCTION AT ROTOKOHU ORIGINALLY PLANNED COURSE The 1949 golf season was opened in Paeroa on Saturday in gloriously fine weather, there being one of the largest crowds ever seen at the Paeroa Golf Club’s new eighteen-hole course at Rotokohu. Saturday was the first day on which the club used its originally planned eighteen-hole course, and the links were in first class order.
In declaring the season open, the president of the club, Mr L. J. Shaw, extended a warm welcome to the many visitors present, especially to those who had travelled long distances to attend. He expressed the appreciation of the members to those who had given such sterling service to complete the work required to the club’s course and buildings so that everything would be ready for the opening of the season. The clubhouse had been attractively renovated and further extensions to this building were planned for the following season. The whole course, as a result of the efforts of a number of members, was in splendid order.
He explained that all handicaps had been increased, owing to the fact that two long holes now replaced two which were formerly somewhat shorter. He then called upon Mrs Shaw to play the first ball and she opened the season with a very creditable drive.
During the afternoon a match was played over nine holes, the winners being Miss Q. A. Gernhoefer and Mr N. Oldham.
