MRS E. E. NIELSEN h WORKED AT COROMANDEL DIED AT AGE OF 102 YEARS One of the last links with the very early days of Coromandel was severed last Thursday when Mrs Eleanor Eliza Nielsen passed away in Auckland at the age of 102 years. Mrs Nielsen came to New Zealand 84 years ago from her birthplace, London, and worked in hotels at Coromandel fop soma time before retiring from this to take up storekeeping. Although she had intended to spend only two years in New Zealand, when the ship “ Bombay ” on which she was travelling was nearly wrecked about 300 miles off the coast, she determined then not to travel back home, but to spend the rest of her days in New Zealand.
On going to live in Auckland, Mrs Nielsen joined the choir of St. Matthew’s church and was also an early member, of the Auckland Choral
Society. On the morning of her 101st birthday she attended a service at St. Matthew’s. w
Right up to the time of her death Mrs Nielsen -enjoyed life w to the full and was in complete possession of her faculties. The last few years of her life brought her much honour in the form of congratulations from the King and Queen and a special place at many public functions.
On her ICOth birthday Mrs Nielsen waltzed at her party while on the eve of her 102nd birthday she was found curling her hair snd apologising for her “ vanity.” In December last she was well enough to attend a film at an Auckland theatie.
Mrs Nielsen is survived by her husband, Mr Oscar Edward Nielsen, who is 20 years her junior.
