VARIED EVENTS

GOOD ENTRIES TURUA SPORTS MEETING FIXTURE HELD AT THAMES Good entries were received for the large variety of events at the annual meeting of the Turua Sports Club, held on the Parawai racecourse last Saturday. There was a large crowd in attendance and the programme catered for all tastes.

Chief races of the day were for the Don Stewart Trotting Cup, won by Armuhu, and the T. J. Scott Memorial Cup, won by Meteor; some excellent displays of horsemanship were given in both of these races.

There were some capable young riders competing in the children’s events and the judges must have been hard put to choose between them. Children also took part in highland and tap dancing competitions which were conducted on the back of a large truck. Music for this was supplied by a piano and bagpipes while the Kerepehi Boys’ Brass Band also contributed suitable selections.

A competition to guess the weight of a live sheep, caused much interest and discussion among sheep farmers and the general public, Mr G. Kingham guessing the correct weight of 119 i lb.

The president of the Turua Sports Club, Mr J. A. Pye, thanked the public for its support and generosity before the meeting closed. He introduced Mrs T. Scott and Mr Don Stewart, who presented the trophies they had donated to the winners of the two big races, Messrs Cathcart apd Johansen. Results are as follow:— Horse Events Chas.
