OVER 600 ATHLETES COMPETE

MANY VISITORS

EXCITING EVENTS OPEN SPORTS MEETING CRIDGE CUP PRESENTED Although conducted under grey skies nnd changeable weathter conditions, the annual open sports netting of the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, which was held on the Paeroa domain on Saturday, proved a very popular and at times exciting carnival. Ovtr 600 competitors from the Waikato district, Rotorua and Mt. Albert ■clubs travelled to Paeroa to compete for the many handsome trophies which included a large clock, several wall mirror’s and other useful and expensive articles, the value of which was assessed at £163. The gate takings totalled £B5 14s 6d, and this amount, plus the entry fees, was estimated to cover the cost of the prizes. Marching to the music of the Te Aroha Band, the Paeroa club’s team led the grand parade on to the grounds, with Hamilton and other teams following and the Paeroa children bringing up the rear. An incongruous note was struck in this rather solemn and impressive spectacle by the very last competitor, a tiny curlybeaded boy, who strode along, head High, and swung his arms with great gusto. His obvious enjoyment and lack of pelf-consciousness drew many A laugh from the onlookers.

When the teams had taken up their positions facing the grandstand, the president, Mr A. L. Wrigley, announced th© result of the march past —Paeroa L Rotorua 2 and Morrinsville 3.

His worship the mayor, Mr Edwin

Edwards, was then introduced. He congratulated the club on the excellent manner in which the sports were

being conducted and he said he was

prowl of the way the welfare of the children and athletes of the town was

being .provided for. Visiting competitors and spectators were welcomed .and the Te Aroha Band and St. John Ambulance Brigade members were thanked for their attendance. The Alf Cridge Memorial Cycle Cup for the three mile cycle race which had been held the previous week was then presented to A. Vosper. This was the third, year running that Vosper had

■won the cup, Mr Edwards said, when •congratulating him on his success, and all realised how fully he deserved the honour. Vosper trained well and rode sportingly and his was a very papular win, Mr Edwards added.

The points prize for the team win-
