BAD START

SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS COLLAPSING PLATFORM An amusing and unconventional beginning was registered at the 1949 New Zealand surf life saving championships at Waihi Beach on Friday last. The official party was seated on the makeshift platform on the beach. Microphone in hand, the president, Mr A. Gardner, was about to introduce the mayor of Waihi, Mr H. J. Pickett, when—crack—the centre plank of wood which supported the platform snapped, and down came the officials ! Despite the adverse circumstances, however, the programme proceeded according to schedule, broken platform and all, and it was not until the first event was well under way, and the officials had retired to terra firma, that efforts were made to repair the damage. Mr Pickett dismissed the incident with: “ The start of this meeting was perhaps not quite right but you know the carpenters are out of work in Auckland and evidently we have had some amateurs at work here.”
