MERCURY BAY MEETING WATER-COLOUR DISPLAY The July meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute was held in the hall. There were 24 members present and Mrs Sharpies (president) was in the chair. The meeting opened with the singing of “ Comrades and Friends ” and the aspiration. Letters from England, expressing thanks for parcels, were read. A letter was received from the district federation inviting the institute to contribute towards a prize fund to help defray the expenses of medals for the winners in the drama festival. money would be involved so that it could be ascertained what the institute’s share would be. A letter was read from the district federation regarding hospital visiting and it was decided to carry on as at present. When a member of the gardening circle visits during the month Mrs Lemme agrees to assist where necessary. Remits and amendments from the district federation were dealt with. Miss Kathleen Hodge was appointed delegate to the conference instead of Mrs Sharpies and Mrs Russell, who will not be able to attend. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Stocker, W. Oxley, A. Chaney and Crisp. An exhibition of water-colours by Miss Lee were much admired. The meeting closed with the singing of the national anthem. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs Russell 1, Mrs Clark 2; best head, Mrs Clark 1, Mrs Lee 2; best vase, Mrs Clark 1, Mrs White 2; handmade belt, Mrs Lee 1, Mrs Russell 2; bottled tomatoes, Mrs Sharpies 1, Mrs Russell 2.
