DEBUTANTES’ BALL

12 GIRLS PRESENTED SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION MR SUTHERLAND IMPRESSED The third annual Debutantes’ Ball, held in the Turua hall on May 24. was in every way a great success. Over 300 people were present including Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, to whom ’he girls were presented. The Turua Young People’s Social Club which organised the function had decorated the hall with flowering gum and yellow and gold streamers looped with silver stars; the stage featured cellophane butterflies and autumn leaves as a suitable setting for the twelve charming debutantes who were presented.

Before the ceremony, Mr S. Clark, M.C., introduced the president of the dub ’ Mrs C. V. Marceau who wore a gown of floral silk crepe. Mrs Marceau introduced Mr Sutherland to the gathering and presented him with a bouquet for Mrs Sutherland, expressing sympathy with her in her illness and regret that she could not attend.

At 9 o’clock came the announcement that the presentation was to commence and as each young girl gracefully down the centre of e hall with her escort she was announced by Mr J- Py e - ?^ e y er ® .received at the steps at the oo o the stage 'by Mrs Marceau who pre sented them to Mr Sutherland. Sutherland congratulated the club on their function and also spoke of the charming girls who were growing in beauty and numbers every year. He said he had travelled all over his electorate and had attended many balls but had never been to one as successful as this. A buffet supper of four sittings was held in th e buildings opposite to the hall and as the debutantes left the hall the band played ” I’ll See You In My Dreams.” Music was supplied by Herb Walker’s orchestra, extras being played by Mrs B. Fox. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Fay James and partner. The debutantes were presented in the following order:— Miss Margaret Jamieson, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. G. Jamieson of Turua. was escorted by her father. She wore a frock of needle thread lace over white satin. The gathered bodice joined the nipped-in waist and a full circular skirt swung from padded hips. The neckline, sleeves and waistband were embroidered with pearl beads. A white satin bow at a low waistline was the only trimming at the back of the frock. White elbow-length gloves and a small coloured posy made charming accessories.

Miss Nola Egan, only daughter of Mi - and Mrs G. Egan of Orongo, was escorted by her father. She wore a frock of white net over white satin. The bodice featured the off-the-shoulder neckline, low waist and full skirt. White kid gloves and a posy of white roses completed the ensemble.

Miss Betty Nicholson, only daughter of Mr and the late Mrs N. B. Nicholson of Turua, was escorted by her father. She wore a brocaded silk frock with a frilled neckline and waist and a very full skirt, with lace mittens and a coloured posy. Miss Joan Scott, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. G. Scott, of Turua. was escorted by her brother, Mr G. Scott. She wore a frock of ivory satin featuring a flared skirt and ruchcd bodice with a frilled off-the-shoulder neckline and short sleeves. Cream elbow-length gloves and a pink posy made a very pretty finishing touch.

Miss Olga Radich. eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Radich of Turua. was escorted by her father. She wore a frock of satin striped marquiset. with a fitting bodice with cape sleeves and a full circular skirt. Silver bead embroidery was on the yoke and a sash of marquiset tied in a large bow at the back. Lace mittens and a white posy formed the accessories.

Miss Moya Burke, only daughter of Mr and Mrs N. Burke of Ngatea, was escorted by her father. She wore a frock of satin striped ninon marquiset featuring a three-tiered full skirt with a nipped-in waist, finished with a frilled neckline and short puff sleeves. Lace mittens, elbow length, and a lovely pink and blue posy were the accessories.

Miss Elspeth Gray, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Gray of Matatoki, was escorted by her father. She wore a charming frock with a velvet bodice and a skirt of lace over satin, the skirt being looped from hem to waist in the front, showing a series of frills. She

wore lace mittens and earned a coloured posy. Miss Joyce Morrison, only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. M. Morrison of Hikutaia, was escorted by her uncle, Mr E. H. Bax. Her frock was very sweet, madb of frilled white spotted net over satin with pink and blue rosebuds dotted over the skirt. The neckline was just off-the-shoulder, the mittens of lace, and the posy pink and white. Mis> Daphne Erceg, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Erceg of Ngatea. was escorted by her father. She wore a French lace frock cut on princess lines with frills down the seam of the skirt and a peplum. Lace* mittens and a lovely posy made charming- accessories.

Miss Fay Strong, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Strong of Kerepehi. was escorted by her uncle. Mr A. Geary. Her frock was charmingly made of ivory satin and net, the fitting bodice being finished at the neckline with frills of net, e<iged with satin and ornamented with sequins. The bouffant skirt of net was appliqued from the waist-line with white lace flowers. She wore lace mittens and carried a white posy.

Miss Joy Clark, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Clark of Turua, was escorted by her father. She wore a lovely frock of silk pique georgette over satin with sequins on the skirt. The bodice had an off-the-shoulder neckline with straps of velvet flowers. Lace mittens and a coloured posy completed the ensemble.

Miss Merle Chinnery, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. C. Chin-

nery of Turua, was escorted by her father. She wore a frock of spotted net over satin, trimmed with lace at the neck and waistline. Bows embroidered with sequins were on each shoulder and sequins were also embroidered on the very full skirt. Lace mittens and a coloured posy made a charming finish.
