WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

COROMANDEL MEETING HELD CHILDREN’S DANCE POSTPONED The December and Christmas meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Coromandel, recently and Miss Russell presided over a good attendance. Several apologies for absence were received. The meeting opened with the prayer, after which the president’s monthly letter was read. The concert party from the federation headquarters and the Plains is to arrive in January. Several members have offered hospitality to at least 18 members of the party. The children’s fancy dress dance to have been held on December 18, has been postponed till a later date. Several letters of grateful acknowledgement of parcels sent by the institute were received and members were asked to continue bringing goods to be sent to England. Mrs Inglis gave a report on the garden party held at Mrs Jensen’s at Waitakaruru. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Ball for typing the institute programmes. One new member was welcomed with acclamation.

The roll call was an exchange of Christmas gifts. Many useful gifts were received. A competition, names of songs represented by members, was won by Mrs E. M. Lucas and a knowledge test was won by Mrs A. S. Tonkin. During the evening Mrs Ball entertained everyone with some delightful songs, “ Only a River Running By,” “ Sometimes in Summer,” “ My Message ” and “ Salaam.” A humorous mime, “ Mind Over Matter,” caused lots of laughter. Members who took part were: Mesdames C. Anderson, R. Turner, M. Ball, D. Strongman, E. Hart. After a community sing, supper was served. Just before the meeting closed Mrs Lucas, speaking on behalf of the members, thanked the president, secretary and committee for the work and time they had put in for the entertainment of members and in the interests of the Women’s Institute as a whole. The president extended the compliments of the season to ah. The results of the competitions were as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Dear 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Mrs Hart 3; three pods of peas, Mrs .Dear, only entry; cheese scones, Mrs Dear, only entry; article from cellophane, Miss Russell 1, Mrs Dear 2 and 3.
