THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY “Public Service." FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1947 RURAL FIRES
The weather is making it necessary that at a time when the Christchurch fire is causing a review of urban hazards there should also be vigilance in rural areas. A month of unprecedented sunshine and a series of drying winds have left most of ;he Thames Valley parched for ■;his time of the year. Bush and scrub areas in particular especially are tinder-dry and the danger of fire is very real. A con;inuation of the present weather will sharply increase the risks of serious fires.
Shortly the State forest service will begin a publicity campaign seeking public co-opera-tion in avoiding grass and fore< fires. The Taupo area disaster of two summers ago is still so much in the public mind that the response should be effective. But now, even before this publicity ! begins, there is need for the utmost vigilance. Motorists, picnickers and trampers too have a part to play in avoiding the thoughtless act that might start a serious fire. The slogan “ Keep New Zealand Green ” has a very early urgency this summer.
