(By

Miles B. Hynde)

In the junior 100 yards nine keen athletes faced the starter at the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s evening sports meeting on Wednesday. The field went off to a good start first time. G. Spinks was moving very freely 50 yards down the straight when bad luck struck him, he lost one of his shoes but of course carried on. P. Gregson ran disappointingly. He finished in the bunch behind the placed athletes. J. Jeffries won in nice style from Millington and P. Pennell. M. Parker finished at the rear of the field but this fine athlete will improve. * * * The'senior athletes in the 100 yards werb all very keen, they all broke the starter first time down. The second start was perfect. Don Payne finished in fine style to win from Bob King with R. Laurent and P. Oram dead heating for third. The field of eight starters finished very bunched. Dave Moyes and G. Vuglar were noticed moving very freely.

The one mile cycle race was contested by three junior riders and it proved an easy win for Colin Neil. A. Vosper was a poor second with the new rider Pat Ganley, third.

The junior 440’ yards was a very easy win for Millington; L. Richards finished very fast for second and Neild third; Gibbons and Parker followed. Neild was noticed finishing very strongly and this boy should prove himself an outstanding junior.

R. Laurent won the senior 440 yards in easy style from G. Vuglar who tired very hadly in the last 50 yards. A new athlete to the club, Leighton, finished on past the other tired runners to fill third place. Bob King who was very eager at the start pulled up at the entrance to the straight. Bob broke the start twice and was finally penalized. D. Moyes and A. Jeffries completed the course well back. * * * Colin Neil won the two mile cycle by 220 yards from A. Vosper, who rode very disappointingly. Pat Ganley rode very well for a new rider. The boy will develop into a good rider as the season goes.
