“GET DRAINS CLEARED”

ENGINEER’S VIEW EXPRESSED KOMATA AREA PROBLEM Replying to a request 'by the Ohinemuri County Council for information regarding supply of a suitable dragline for clearing canal drains at Komata North, the senior engineer to the Works Department, Paeroa, advised the September meeting of the council that the department was hiring a machine that could do the work. “Concerning the request for an additional floodgate, I can only reiterate my reply of last year—get the drains cleaned, out and I doubt whether you will repeat the request,” the letter concluded. The engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, said that he thought that the machine mentioned in the letter would not be likely to be hired out at less than a year in the. district. Cr. A. F. Thorp said that the district could guarantee a year’s work for the. machine. The chairman, Mr T. A. Barrett, said that there was the possibility of getting the machine if it would not cost the council too much. At the moment, he said, the matter could be left in abeyance. Mr .Shaw said that the settlers at Komata should assist with the cost because it was partly from their neglect that the drains were in the present condition. The letter was- received and referred to the engineer.
