WEST’S EASY WIN
UNITED BEATEN 20 TO 3 KNOCK-OUT FINAL RUGBY ON PAEROA DOMAIN • The final of the Paeroa Rugby Union’s senior knock-out competition was played on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday and resulted in an easy win for West who defeated United by 20 points to three. Play had been in progress only ten minutes when West backs handled and from a centre kick by Carmichael McMillan secured to hand to Shilton, who scored in a handy position. McLeish goaled and made the score: West 5 United nil Again West backs handled and Carmichael received near his own twentyfive to make a great run, and 1 even though tackled by Murdock he broke through and scored a great try. The kick missed. * West 8 United nil United were awarded a penalty at the twenty-five and T. Smith kicked a good 1 goal. West 8, United 3 From a scrum in the United twentyfive West hooked and Harrison sent to McMillan to Kurtovich, who reverse passed to Fathers who scored. The kick missed. West 11 United For the first 15 minutes of the second spell United had the best of it. West forwards then took a hand and 1 led by Strong, took play to United’s line where McLeish dived over. Again the kick missed. West 14, United 3 Hooking the ball from the scrum Harrison sent Shilton away to kick over Murdock’s head and Carmichael collected the ball to go over for a try. West 17 United 3 McMillan scored a breakaway try when he and Fathers 1 followed up fast and beat the opposition for the touch down: «• West 20, United 3. Mr W. Corrigan was the referee. JUNIOR FINAL UNITED DEFEAT WEST . I In the final of the Paeroa Rugby Union’s junior knock-out competition played on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday, United defeated West by six points to nil. The first half was very evenly contested, the only points coming from a penalty goal by Barker for United. In the second half United had much the better of it and launched repeated attacks. They were in West territory for the greater part of the spell. A miskick by West backs behind the goal line left United with, a clear field and Handley touched town to give United a lead of six to nil. There was no further score and the game ended with United the winners and their unbeaten record maintained for the season. Mr F. Craig was the referee.
