PAEROA RUGBY
(By
“Offside”)
Thames Valley selector Tom Perry was present at the West-Hikutaia Rugby game at Paeroa last week.
West has a great pack of forwards who have demonstrated the value of good coaching. Only one thing seems ■lacking. They never seem to jump for the ball in a line-out, being content to reach for it. That may he all right if you are as tall as Norm. Herold, but if you are only as tall as Bill Duncan and playing opposite Norm, you haven’t much show. « * * A good goal kicker is worth something to his team. Speechlay kicked two goals for his side. Hikutaia had two easy ones but Dixon missed the first and Clotworthy the second. We all know now what those six points would have meant. ♦ * * With West now one point ahead in the club competitions their meeting with United should be worth seeing. * * * Taka Harrison played his best game to date and displayed flashes of his good form last season. =i: " Teddy Short is back again and led his team well against Morrinsville, * $: United were short of players on •Saturday and some of the -old hands filled in. Ron Nicol, who coaches the team, donned a jersey for the day and demonstrated that he has not forgotten the game. * * * The midgets who came on at halftime 'provided thrills and laughs for the crowd last week. You can’t beat teaching them when they are young. * * * Bob Strong keeps his form well and is going better than ever this season. ** . * M. Waring was a notable absentee from West side due to an attack of measles.
