COROMANDEL STORM

VERY HIGH TIDES AND WINDS DAMAGE DONE IN HARBOUR Exceptionally high tides and winds have been experienced at Coromandel during the last week, and on Friday night the hulk of H.M.S. “ Philomel ” dragged its anchors towards the centre of the harbour. Small craft were capsized and the Government oyster launch broke away from its moorings and was severely pounded on the mole. Damage was done to the propeller and rudder gear. Damage was also done to the. mole by the high seas. On Friday night taxis were unable to get to the wharf to meet the boat from Auckland, as the water was over the road. It is some years since such high tides have been seen in Coromandel.
