74th ANNIVERSARY
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICES AT COROMANDEL On Sunday, May 25, special services were held to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Coromandel. There were good attendances at all three services, especially in the evening, when the Coromandel Silver Band was present.
Major Harry Bailey conducted the services, assisted by Messrs Gordon Rimmer (song leader and .soloist), Arnold Thomas (pianist), and Jim Ericklar, all members of the Youth for Christ Movement. A number of people from outlying districts attended the services during the day and lunch and tea was provided for them by Mr and Mrs A. V. Hart in the vestry, where a very pleasant time was spent renewing acquaintances. The first minister to be inducted to the church in 1872 was Rev. A. M. Tait. The church was built free of debt the following May, 1873', and was* opened by Rev. J. Hill of Thames.
The Youth for Christ Movement is international but only recently established in New Zealand. It is a very strong movement in America where as many as 15,000 attend the meetings. They are all voluntary workers.
The anniversary was a very successful one, and was quite a red letter day in the history of the little church built amid the pines so many years ago.
