TO WHANGAPOUA
ROUTE TO MERCURY BAY DECISION OF THE COUNCIL A resolution that the council approach the Main Highways Board and Public Works Department engineers to arrange a meeting with the council to discuss the merits of routes between Coromandel and Mercury Bay via Whangapoua was proposed by Cr. H. C. Bull, at the November meeting of the Coromandel County Council. Cr. A. Watkins seconded the resolution.
An amendment was proposed by the chairman, Mr E. E. Deeble, that the council make recommendations to the Public Works Department to recondition the Kuaotunu-Whangapoua road and give serious consideration to the diverting of the Coromandel-Mercury Bay highway to go through the Kauri clump reserve on the northern side of the hill.” This was seconded by Cr. T. E. Simpson and on being put to the meeting the amendment was carried. Crs. Bull, Watkins and Wm. Hamilton voted against it.
Cr. Simpson said there was everything in favour of using the old road. There would be no dead ends, it was three miles shorter and on the sunny side of the hill.
Crs. Bull and Hamilton said that the new road through the Moewai would be the best route to take the cream from the rehabilitation settlement to the Mercury Bay factory. Cr. Deeble said the coastal road should be put into order to give service to the rehabilitation settlers, Kuaotunu tourists and the Matarangi flats. There was a big potential revenue there, he said.
