WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED FUNCTION AT MARAMARUA The Maramarua Hall was gaily decorated and tables beautifully set for the tenth birthday celebration of the Maramarua-Kopuku Women’s Institutes. An unusual feature of the decorations was a lovely floral carpet made from white and mauve flowers spread along the front of the stage. The luncheon commenced sharp on mid-day and there were a large number of guests present from Waitakaruru, Ngatea, Pipiroa and Mangatangi. The president, Mrs Symes, read several telegrams from past members before calling on Mrs Reid to light the candles on the cake. Mrs Pinnock then wished Maramarua a very happy day and successful year before cutting the cake. Mrs Symes then received numbers of beautiful bouquets from visiting presidents and local members. The secretary, Mrs Peach, and the treasurer, Mrs Manning, also received bouquets. On behalf of members, Mrs Symes presented Mrs Pinnock with a vase as a token of esteem. Mrs Pinnock suitably replied by saying how good and thoughtful Maramarua members had always been towards her. The programme for the afternoon included: Pianoforte solo by Mrs Fisher, a solo by Miss Chipman of Mangatangi, a play by Mrs Pinnock and partner of Ngatea, a competition by Pipiroa Institute which was won by Mrs .Searle. Mr Broad of Auckland spoke for some time on stage and theatre work m England some years ago. The following prizes were presented: Lucky cup, Miss Smith; lucky number, Mrs Blake; youngest mother, Pipiroa visitor; oldest member, Ngatea member; best bloom, Mrs Symes; birthday posies, Mrs C. Heaven, Misses M. Findlayson and McClaren. Also the babies born throughout the past year received savings books.
