GOOD WORK DONE

THANKS FROM MINISTER RATIONING COMMITTEE BICYCLE TYRES AND TUBES During the four years of bicycle tyre rationing which commenced in August of 1942, the Paeroa Rationing Committee met on an average of one night each week. In this time a total of 13,568 applications were received and considered. Of these 7408 were for tyres and 6160 for tubes. The applications approved were 6808 tyres and 5400 tubes. In order to get their work done the committee, Messrs F. J. Johnston, A. E. Day and A. A. Jenkinson were often forced to meet even when their normal duties demanded most of their "time. Appreciation of the work of the committee was expressed by the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, in a letter received by Mr Johnston recently." The letter- read as follows:— “ I am taking this opportunity, when the wartime control over the manufacture and sale of cycle tyres and tubes has been lifted, to express to you and the other members of your committee the thanks of the Government and myself for the help you have rendered in the administration of this control. Spirit Of Service “ The consideration of applications for permits for cycle tyres and tubes, especially in those days when the supply situation was so much worse than at present, must have entailed much time and caused a certain amount of criticism of members by disappointed applicants and I have a real appreciation of the spirit of service that prompted members after accepting appointment to the committee, to keep attending meetings week after week, often at night, when the pressure of other occupations was so great and when the task appeared thankless. “ I wish you to know I have not underestimated the sacrifice made by your members and would express the sincere appreciation of myself and the Government to all members of your committee for the valuable voluntary sei’vice given in the public interest. The letter was signed D. G. Sullivan.
