REVIEW OF PAST YEAR

REPORT BY PRESIDENT

ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB

The following report by the president, Mr W. 'E. Westlake, on the year’s activities of the ’Paeroa Bowling ’Club will be presented at the annual meeting of the club to be held on Saturday night. The report reads as under: — I have pleasure in presenting to you the 42 nd Annual Report and Balance Sheet which discloses a very satisfactory season of Club activities and on behalf of your Executive Committee I congratulate one and all on the successful year of enjoyable bowling. The official opening was held on Saturday, October 13, when 'Members and visiting bowlers joined to usher in the new season in a spirit of jubilation and anticipation. The World War had at that date been brought to a successful conclusion and all Members looked forward to a resumption of pre-war activities. The thanks of the 'Club are due to Mr R. H. IBuckrell, ‘Green (Superintendent, and Mr W. Pringle, Greenkeeper, for the splendid condition of the green, also the Municipal Band for musical selections.

Ideal weather conditions prevailed for most of the season; although the Boxing Pay fixture had to be postponed due to rain. The green was officially closed on May 4. Green. — 'Although drought conditions continued for the greater part of the season members enjoyed good playing conditions due to the untiring efforts of the Green (Superintendent and l the Greenkeeper in watering the green. Favourable comment frequently expressed by visiting bowlers was well deserved and I take this opportunity of expressing to these gentlemen the thanks of all Club members for their efforts over a very difficult period. Finance. — (The healthy condition of the 'Club’s finances has been maintained and thanks are due to our Treasurer, Mr G. Bain, and to our Secretary, Mr T. W. Pye, who have co-operated to conserve the funds by careful and' prudent management.

Roll of Members. — Membership has been well maintained and the roll now stands 80 strong.

Waikato-Thames Valley Centre.— The 'Centre Meeting was attended by our delegates Messrs BuckreTl and Westlake and all matters pertaining to this part of the Centre were discussed. The approval of the Centre to play a section of the 'Centre Tourney at 'Paeroa resulted from their recommendations. Goldfields Assn, and Fixtures.— This Association has during the year worked in the best interests of the Goldfields Clubs and our Club has been honoured by the re-election of Messrs T. W. Pye and R. H. Buckrell to the positions of President and Secretary respectively.

Clothier Shield. — 'The Annual Tournament was held at .Te Aroha on February 2 and two teams skipped by Messrs T. L. Williams and 'P. A. Plummer took part. The Shield was won. by Te Aroha Club. Goldfields Stars.— The Paeroa team, Messrs Shand, Bain, Webb and McInally (skip), were successful in their challenge to ‘Te Aroha, but, subsequently lost the ‘Stars to Hikutaia Club.

Fraser Stars. — The 'Club’s representatives in: the challenge match were Messrs L. Landman and J. Turnbull (skip), who were defeated by the Thames Club team.

Veterans’ Day.— This fixture was played on our green on February 2. Favoured by good weather there was a record attendance of 65 players whose average age was TOJ years. The register signed by each player will be an interesting record of these games in future years. Interclub Games. — It is pleasing to record' that these popular games were resumed during the season. Thames and Waihi Clubs were entertained on our green. The Club’s visit to Thames was most enjoyable, unfortunately the fixture arranged with Waihi at Waihi had to be cancelled owing to bad weather.

Tournaments.— i Six very successful full rink day Tourneys were conducted on the green and were well supported by sister clubs as well as by our Members. Teams from our Club competed at a number of outside fixtures. with a good measure of success. The club was represented at the Rcmuera Club Jubilee Tourney by Messrs Masters, 'BuckreU and Faulkner and at tire Centre Tourney at Matamata by Messrs Johnstone. Hubbard. Weadon and Pirie (skip). Waikato-Thames Valley Centre—rapioa of Champions Rink. — The games were played on our

green on February 9, and the Club •epresentatives, •Messrs J. Mclnally, W. E. Westlake, iC. C. Webb and T. L. Williams (skip), were successful in winning the Goldfields section. The finals were played on the Frankton green on February 16, the finalists being Putaruru and Paeroa Clubs. A very exciting game resulted in a draw 2!2 all. As this necessitated a re-play the game was commenced in failing light and finished in electric light, Paeroa team running out the winners 24—16.

The Club is proud to win this coveted, title and to hold the “ Howden Shield ” for the first time. The team is to be congratulated on its success and the Club has decided to make permanent record of the occasion by having a photograph of the team with Shield hung in the Pavilion. It is worthy to record that the veteran skip “Nudger” Williams has now the distinction of winning three Champion of Champions Titles, viz. Singles 19’38, Pairs 1941, Full Rink 194’6. We congratulate him most heartily on his performance. Club Competitions.— The following competitions were played during the season and we congratulate the winners:—

“A” Grade Championship, won by T. L. Williams. “B” Grade Championship, won by M. Putt. Handicap Singles, won by H. ‘Shand. Handicap Pairs, won by M. Putt and H. Shand (skip). Champion Pairs, won by G. C. Bain and T. W. Pye '(skip). Brenan Shield, won by ‘F. McQuillan, J. Bartlett, IG. Masters, T. L. Williams (skip). President’s Fours, won by P. Ryan, E. W. iHari-is, S. Ang-liss and J. Turnbull (skip).

Bereavements.-— lt is with sincere regret that I have to report the death during the year of the following past members of the Club: Messrs R. Whiting, C. Mettam, J. H. Mclntyre and J. Moreland. The sympathy of the Club has been expressed to their families in theii' bereavement. Conclusion.— l wish to extend my personal thanks to the Members of the Executive Committee for their loyal support to myself during my term of office, the efforts of the Secretary, Mr T. W. Pye, the Treasurer, Mr IG. C. Bain, the Green Superintendent, Mr R. H. Buckrell, and the .Selector, 'Mr C. C. Webb, have been very much appreciated by me. I have gained much pleasure in serving the Club as President and appreciate the honour conferred upon me. To the Club and each member I offer my good wishes for continued success and to my successor my wish is that he will enjoy a happy year in office.
